Clean Your Makeup Brushes Regularly

Many of us neglect to clean our makeup brushes, which can cause acne-forming bacteria to be spread over your face on a daily basis. As we know, makeup brushes, especially quality sets, can be expensive, so we want to maintain their condition. Here are a couple simple ways to clean your makeup brushes, restoring them to their original luster.

Bar Soap Method: Unscented, white bar soap is best to use for this method. Wet the bar of soap, then massage your dirty makeup brush on the bar of soap to work up a lather. Rinse with luke warm water, lightly massaging the bristles as you rinse to ensure you get all of the soap out. You may need to repeat the process until the rinse water runs clear. Set on a towel or paper towel to dry.

Dish Soap Method: You will need liquid dish soap and a clean sponge. Pour a small amount of dish soap onto the sponge, then rub your brush against the surface. Rinse with lukewarm water, wipe with a towel to remove any leftover debris and lay your brushes flat to dry. Sometimes I pour the liquid dish soap directly onto the bristles and massage in, then rinse. You may need to repeat the process until the rinse water runs clear.

Olive Oil Method: This method works well on smaller makeup brushes, as it conditions at the same time. Either dip the brush in a small cup of Olive oil (a shot glass works very well for this), or pour the oil onto the bristles and massage in for a few seconds. Rub the bristless with a sponge or towel to remove the makeup. I find it best to wash/rinse with dish soap to ensure all the makeup is removed, especially with larger brushes, such as the ones you use on your face, that you don't want to be left oily.

Note: Use luke warm water, not too cold or not too hot, to rinse. Also, be sure not to get the brush barrel too wet as you could cause the bristles to fall out and the metal part can rust.
