Tips for Cleaning Your Mattress

Many don’t consider cleaning their mattress, but you should! The mattress is where you spend approximately 6-8 hours a night (or more depending on your lifestyle) and over the years it can hold a collection of dust, sweat, oil, skin cells and if you have had it for a while, you probably have some stains on it. Many times mattresses can have stains that appear slightly yellow, this is usually the result of sweat and oil build-up. First we’ll take a look at deep cleaning and removing as much dust and contaminants as possible. First, use your upholstery attachment for your vacuum cleaner, this will remove the initial layer of dust mites, dead skin cells, etc. Next, you can go over the mattress with a garment steamer, be sure to hold the steamer nozzle as close as possible to the mattress to not drip any water on it. It’s ok if a few drops get on the mattress, but getting the mattress soaked is not a good idea. The steam that penetrates the mattress will kill the layer of dust mites that may live closer to the surface of the mattress. Lastly, we recommend going over the mattress once more with the upholstery attachment on your vacuum. As far as removing stains from sweat and oil, food, or pets...you can buy a carpet and upholstery cleaner formulated to remove pet stains. These products typically contain enzymes that are great at tackling pet odors
